Course Number: STR-007
Course Field: Structures
PDH Credits: 3

Course Overview

The behavior of a structural member is dictated by its material and its geometry. This course is focused on the influence of geometry on the behavior of a structural member. The cross section and the length of the structural member affect how much that member deflects under a load, and the cross section determines the stresses that exist in the member under a given load.

This course discusses:

  • Properties of areas, including:
    • Centroid of an area
    • First moment of area
    • Area moment of inertia
    • Parallel axis theorem
    • Polar moment of inertia
    • Section modulus
    • Radius of gyration
  • Properties of common cross sections
